Overview

Monkey Goes West is Wild Rice's holiday musical, a cheeky retelling of the Chinese classic Journey to the West for the whole family, running from 12 November to 27 December 2026 at The Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre in Wild Rice @ Funan. It is written by Alfian Sa'at, with music by Elaine Chan, and directed by Ivan Heng (Wild Rice, accessed 8 Nov 2026)

The story

The orphan Ah Tang runs away after a quarrel with his adoptive family and finds himself in a strange land. He befriends Wukong, the cheeky Monkey King, Pigsy, a brave but always-hungry warrior, and Sandy, a stubborn but loyal river ogre. Together they face the fire-breathing Red Boy, the shape-shifting King Bull and Princess Iron Fan, who has a magic fan. The show has songs, gags, wushu and magic (Wild Rice, accessed 8 Nov 2026)

Production history

Monkey Goes West premiered at Victoria Theatre in 2014, playing to sold-out houses and winning three Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards (Production of the Year, Production of the Year (Reader's Choice) and Best Costume Design), and returned to Drama Centre Theatre in 2016. This year it is back at Wild Rice's home in Funan with support from The Ngee Ann Kongsi (Wild Rice, accessed 8 Nov 2026)
